Wario is a Nintendo anti hero character that has starred in a vast repository of games and who's primary motivation is money and treasure. He was originally intended as a villainous version of Mario who captured Mario's Castle in Super Mario Land, and has since gotten two of his own series (Wario Land and Wario Ware) and numerous appearances in both main Mario games and Mario spinoffs.

[edit] Wario's Appearance

Wario's appearance is pretty much the opposite of that of Mario, wearing a yellow shirt and purple dungarees instead of the red and blue combination that Mario wears. He is also... more overweight than Mario, has oddly pointed shoes for some unexplainable reason and face wise, at least according to King Boo, looks terrifying. Oh, and probably has some of the strangest mustache style around.

[edit] Wario's Personality and Characteristics

The main aspect of Wario's personality, as easily seen in the games is greed. He is literally obsessed with money and treasure, constantly after ways to become richer and is seemingly at the point where saying he's a millionaire due to this is an understatement.

Oh, and as you can guess, quite a few somewhat heroic characters do not trust Wario in the least.

[edit] Wario's History in Games

In the series, Wario's first appearance was in Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins, where Wario had captured Mario's castle (and island) and brainwashed the inhabitants to obey him. In this first appearance, Wario was pretty much a complete evil villain in a more similar way to Bowser in most games than an anti hero, and actually fought Mario with the power ups Mario himself used. Wario was defeated in this game and after somehow being turned into an infant, ran away likely crying.

Later on, he also foiled Mario and friends in a variety of other plans, from the bucket on the head idea in Mario and Wario to taking over a forest in Wario's Woods. However, these weren't really major roles for him, and his next major appearance would come in his first starring role, the Wario Land series.

The Wario Land series was then Wario's first playable appearance. First game was pretty much like a Mario game with body slams used to beat up enemies, down to the invincibility star item, goomba like gooms and two hit to kill Wario health system. However, it was a great game, and did introduce Captain Syrup, who would later appear in both Wario Land 2 and the upcoming Wario Land Shake!

Wario Land 2 pretty much scrapped the old stuff and the health system, with Wario being nearly invincible. Captain Syrup also returned, with the pirates attacking Wario's Castle and Wario having to explore a wide variety of crazy levels to stop them. This was also seen as a great game in the series.

Wario Land 3 kept many of the same mechanics, and changed the story to Wario entering a treasure box world, helping a mysterious figure and then defeating said creature when it turned out it was Rudy the Clown.

Wario Land 4 was a later release, and a Gameboy Advance game with full colour graphics filled with detail. Transformations from Wario Land 3 were back, with classics like Vampire and Flaming Wario returning. On the flip side, he got a health meter sometime around now again.

Wario Land The Shake Dimension is the latest game in the Wario Land series, and is a Wii game that utilises the motion controls for shaking enemies and objects along with the traditional D Pad controls for running, jumping, shoulder barges, etc. It's much the same as the others, with some new transformations as well as some classic ones, much of Wario's typical moves and abilities and it features the return of Captain Syrup as well as the new main villan, the Shake King.

[edit] Trivia

  • At one time, the advertisements for earlier Wario games advertised him as some kind of crazed hypnotist type character, attempting to mind control the viewer.
  • He currently owns a massive list of possible franchises, including Wario Ware (with factory and such like), three stadiums, one gold mine and his own Wario game franchise in the series.
  • Wario's car was in Mario Kart Double Dash and DS, his bike was in Mario Kart Wii.
  • It is possible that Wario's Gold Mine, with the entire underground/mine cart theme takes inspiration from the Wario Land series.
