New Super Mario Bros Walkthrough Part 1
Welcome to my awesome guide for completing New Super Mario Bros! This guide, will cover the main levels of the game after first explaining some game tips, enemy advice and what not, and gives a full overview on the story and characters.
Story
The general story (going from the in-game start cinema, not the manual), is that Mario and Princess Peach were outside the castle walkingw hen Mario noticed a dark storm cloud over the castle. Then the castle got hit by lightning and when Mario went to investigate the event, Bowser Jr appeared and kinapped Peach. Mario then goes off to save Peach, before getting hit by a shell, turning him to small/regular Mario. The game then begins from this point.
World 1
Grass Land
(the names are roughly based on the English translation of Super Mario Bros 3 as the worlds have only been given numbers in this game).
When you first start the game, and arrive at the far left of the map screen for world 1, you will notice an assortment of squares. If the square is red, it's an ordinary level you have not cleared yet. If it is a Tower, it is a dungeon filled with traps where you have to eventually battle Bowser Jr. If it's a Castle, it's a tougher dungeon where you defeat a world specific boss character.
There is also a winged block. Go to the level that is floating over and the block will appear in the level and give you some item, often a rare one, when you hit it.
The Hammer Bro also wanders the map, and if he appears in the level you are about to play, you have to fight the Hammer Bro in the level somewhere, often near the start of mid way point. This will also get you a rare item.
Level 1
The first level is also the most basic in the game, with enemies limited to goombas and Koopas. keep going through the level, and hit question mark blocks
for
power ups (there's not tricky parts) and when you see a lone block, hit the block to get a mega mushroom. Now smash through everything in your path, and get to
the
flag pole to end the level!
Level 2
This happens to be your first cave level, being underground and all, so watch out. You will automatically smash the bricks at the start and get some coins, so go further right. keep goingh and jumping across the see saw platforms, and go down the first pipe you see. Now, there is a room with a koopa. But don't just get some coins and leave, hit the enemy and throw the shell to the floor. It will then smash the blocks under the pipe, so become regular Mario by getting hit a few times. Run under neath, and you are in a secret room with many goombas! Now get the mega mushroom, smash them, and get 3 1-ups really easily! Now, you could follow the path to the goal pipe, but if you want to go another way, go to the final see saw. Now, stand on the left end until it tilts up, and jump above the top row of blocks! Go right, get a star coin and you can use the hidden exit to skip a couple of levels and get to the Tower!
Level 3
Jump across the mushrooms to the springboard, now jump on. Press A again and you will shoot high into the air. Go up until you land on a bouncy mushroom and get a star coin, then float down and get the next. Keep jumping over the gaps until there are three or four mushrooms and jump up of one of them to get a star coin. Keep following the path until you reach the end flag!
Tower
Since this is your first Tower level, it should not be too difficult. First, climb up the moving ledges, while not getting caught between (if this happens, you die). Now quickly run through the gaps in the moving blocks, and jump into a pipe. Now, normally, you go down, but here, you get shot up really high quickly to a new ledge. Keep climbing onto you to get to another green pipe, and wait for the gap to appear between the above blocks. You should get shot upwards extremely quickly through the middle to the big red boss door.
Bowser Jr
To defeat Bowser Jr, jump on his head. Now avoid his shell, and jump again when he comes out. Repeat until you win this extremely simple battle to reach the next level.
Level 4
Run through the first part of the level, as normal, until you reach a green pipe. Shoot the paratroopa with fire (if you can), then hit the question block to get a mini mushroom, making Mario tiny. Run left, and to the small pipe. Go down. Now run right (yes, across the water) and wall kick to the coin. Run back and enter the green pipe. Run right now through the rest of the level, avoiding the respawning goombas, and go to the flag to finish yet another level!
Level 5
Leap across the mushrooms, and avoid or destroy the koopas. When faced with a set of balancing platforms, jump on the left one, then the right to progress. Now go into the green pipe, and ride the mushroom, gaining another star coin. When you come out, collect the red coins and jump across the platforms all the way to the right to reach the flag pole.
Castle
In the first Castle level, first go right and jump on the rope. Go to the right, and jump off to the next platform while avoiding the first podoboo (fireball). Cross the next rope to a platform, and hit the block for a fire flower. Cross the sinking platforms, and temporarily crush the Dry Bones enemy (the skeleton). Go under the spikes when they rise and do not stop until you reach a gap with a star coin. Wall kick and get it, then when the spikes rise, run to the other side. Cross the ropes and platforms, and go through the Big red boss door..
In this room, just go right until you reach a bridge and you'll meet:
Bowser:
To defeat Bowser, you must hit the switch which you can do in many ways. One, is to jump over him, another is to shoot him with fireballs until he falls in the lava, then hit the switch. You can also use the mega mushroom and shell. Once he falls, save and go to world 2!
World 2
Desert Land
This world is very different from the first, partially as it's in a desert environment and introduces Pokeys, Lakitu and a few other things, like fake blocks.
Level 1
This beginning level should give you no trouble. Go right to meet the first pokey. Defeating it if you are firey is easy, just jump on the nearby platform and fire one fireball to destroy it's head. Keep going right, and use the block to vault the next one. When there's a star coin, shoot the pokey and grab it, and avoid the pokeys on floating platforms later in the level. Now, just dodge the pokeys and manouver the platforms to reach the finish flag.
Level 2
Go right now to see Lakitu. Now, since he throws spinies at you, I recommend running like hell and not stopping until you reach the flag, jumping the pits and bouncing from platform to platform on your way.
Level 3
This level is an underground maze, so read carefully. First, slide right and defeat the koopas. Pound through the panel and the end, and go left on the lower floor, avoiding a bat. Pound through three more panels. When you see a piranha plant, shoot it with a fireball and go right, dropping down and going right again to the next chamber.
Slide down in this room, then go to the small alcove with the switch. Hit it to raise the water level. Go right again. Destroy or avoid the mega piranha plant is this area, then go up and right to a red switch. Press it to create red blocks, and run right to the flag pole.
Level 4
First, go right like normal, then avoid the koopa and climb up. Follow the path down, avoiding the piranha plants and then swim to the right. Go under the platform to find a secret chamber, and go down the red pipe. Collect the coins down here, then go outside and hit the switch. Jump up to rejoin the main level, way further on. When the path goes down, hit the left block and pound the switch to raise the ground. Jump the piranha plants, and jump to the right. Avoid the hammer bros, climb the steps and hit the flag pole to advance again!
Tower
In here, go right across the rotating platforms, then jump on the blue blocks. Climb to the next one and ride it to the left, then hang on the rope, swinging left. Jump up and across the platforms to the right in the higher room, then to a ledge at the far right side. Go up the pipe. Now hit the block for another item, and jump across the spinning platforms to the right. Now go across another set to the left, climb up, and run across the steps to the right. Hit a block to make even more platforms appear, and use them to get to a pipe near the middle of the room. Go up to be near the boss door.
Bowser Jr
He fights no differently, so use the same strategy you decided to use in world 1 to beat him again.
Level 5
Here, go right while avoiding the annoying fake block monsters. Now, at the end, there will be a section with a hammer bro. Don't go up the normal pipe, note how there's a hidden ledge behind a wall? Sink into the quicksand and keep jumping to emerge there. Go right, and down. Jump on the fake block, and when it jumps, grab the star coin. Now, go left, go up the ledges and go right to the goal flag!
Level 6
Okay, this level is odd. First, go into a pipe which goes up. You will end up on a platform which moves as the screen scrolls. Avoid the piranha plants, and soon, one will land on your platform. Shoot it. Now kill the second one to have a clear platform again and an easier ride. When there's two, just pick one to stand on. Eventually, the platforms will go off screen, so drop down and jump across the up and down moving platforms to the flag.
Castle
As you start, you will see a huge rolling ball crash down, so stay to the left until it's falls in a pit. Now go right, and up the steps, jumping the smaller balls as they roll down. Swing across the pit with another mega one, that jump on the blocks when a small one appears from your right. Go right, and duck in the hole to avoid the next one, and then duck in the second gap to avoid the one after. Through the door, go to the right avoiding the bullet bills, and hit the first switch. Drop down and avoid a rolling ball, then go further to the right. Swing across using the rope to avoid the mega rolling ball, then jump the next 3. Go the right afterwards and hit the switch to make the boss door appear. Go inside to face..
Mummy Pokey
The boss will burrow through the ground and appear at different heights, so when he's medium height, stomp on him. Then, ground pound him the next time. or, just fire a load of fireballs until he's defeated by randomly pressing X. Also, jump his rock spitting attacks. When he's defeated, get the key.
Now, depending on the size you were when you beat the boss, one of these things will happen:
Normal, shell, Super, Fire or Mega Mario- Go to World 3
Mini Mario- Go to World 4.
Scroll down to world 4 if you beat him while mini Mario, but if not, read on to go to world 3!
World 3
Water Land
This world introduces even more changes than the last. For one, many levels now involving swimming underwater for periods of time, and when you are underwater, you can only kill enemies with fireballs or as mega Mario. And secondly, your first ghost house exists in this world. These are haunted mansion style levels filled with boos (ghosts), pumkins and other creepy enemies.
Level 1
Your first underwater level is here! Now, go right and avoid the various sizes of Cheep cheep (unless you are fire Mario, then blast them with it!) Keep going, and collect the red coins for an item, and you want a fire flower. This is because, along with the next block, certain items guarantee you adequate protection. Go right, and your foe appears. A Cheep Cheep fish that can eat Mario in one attack! if you have fireballs, use them. if you have a star, hit the thing. Now keep going right, shooting or avoiding more fish. Come out of the green pipe at the end, then go right to the flag!
Level 2
This is another flying level, so jump right across the mushrooms. Go down the yellow pipe, and you can get a star coin, and one you come out, jump across the nearby moving platforms. Then, jump on the mushroom, and ride it for a bit as it moves to the right. Cross some more platforms, ride another mushroom and then jump off at the end to get to the flag!
Tower
Here, jump in the middle pipe. You will get shot up to some fences, so keep jumping up. When you see some black orbs, do not touch them! They're amps, and they give out a painful electric shock! Press X on the panel to switch sides and go up again. Now go to the left, avoiding the koopas, and go up again. Go left after than, climb the ledges, go the mesh panels and go through the door. now go up more mesh panels while avoiding the koopas, and in the door right at the top. Now go right, wall kick and left into the boss door.
Bowser Jr
Defeat him like the last two times, but don't worry! In some of the next battles, I promise his boring attack pattern will change slightly!
Level 3
Go down the pipe to enter another undersea level. Here, you will meet the blooper enemies, which follow Mario in an awkward pattern and try to attack him. So go right, avoiding the first blooper and keep going. When you get to pipes with currents coming out, drop down, hit the switch and swim to the far right. Go down to go past those that once had a current. Now go right, and up in the next area. Now, go up the green pipe and go right to the flag!
Ghost House
In your first ever spooky ghost house level, go right to an orange switch and hit it to make the nearby slope turn to steps. Quickly climb them, and go right. You can just defeat or avoid the pumkin enemy, and hit another switch. Ride the platform climb the steps and fall down to the right. Go left while down here and hit the block for a switch, then hit that. Go up the stairs, drop down the gap and go into the door.
In here, go to the right and hit the switch. Go up the stairs, through the door and to the flag.
Castle
First, go to the right, while avoiding the huge spiky pillars which crash down from the ceiling. When you go a bit further, you have to avoid two Whomps. After that, there's a spike pit. This would normally be a case of luring the Whomp to fall so you can use it as a platform, but the best way is just to jump directly at the rope.
Then, you cross the water and grab a rope. Lure the huge Whomp into falling, then land on the platform it's on. Keep going right and avoid the spiky pillars until you finally reach the red boss door. Enter to fight:
Cheepskipper
The boss here is an enormous fish, and the fish swims around beneath the platform with two smaller cheep cheep enemies. What you have to do, while avoiding the small ones, is to jump on it's head when the boss itself jumps from the water. Repeat this twice to get the key needed to go to world 5!
Note: You can also use fireballs, but it's not recommended.
World 4 (Skip if you beat world 3)
World 4 is kind of set in a forest, which in turn has a swamp within it. This means one important thing about the world...
Do not go in any water which is purple! This liquid, as well as probably not being water, is an instant kill to Mario or Luigi, and is often found in pits in certain levels. Always stay out of it.
Level 1
Go to the righy and jump up the steps. Now jump across the platforms while avoiding the spiders. Now, you have to ride the sea monster Dorrie to the right while avoiding the spiders dropping down. Ground pound to make it go faster. At the end, cross the platforms and hop on the spider to reach the flag.
Level 2
On the mushroom level, hop across the mushrooms until you get to a purple one. These bend in the direction you're standing on, so keep going to the right. Jump across more platforms to get to the halfway flag, then keep going right across the platforms while avoiding flying koopas to reach the flag.
Level 3
First, go down the pipe to enter an underwater level. Swim right, and stay at the bottom to avoid the huge eel coming from the right of the screen. Keep going, and this time, stay at the top of the screen to avoid the eel coming at you again from then right. Avoid the mini unagis, and keep going to the halfway flag. stay low again to avoid the eel, and go along, avoiding the mini unagis. Hit the switch and stay low to avoid the eel, and go near the top of the screen afterwards to avoid it for the last time. Exit via the pipe, and climb the steps, dodging the goomba to reach the flag.
Tower
First, climb the ledges as they close in on you, and get a mushroom from the blocks to the left. Now, in the next room, you must keep moving as the lava rises, so get climbing the fences, avoiding the amps. When there is a row of blocks, quickly go through the gap. Climb some more fences here, and go right under the spiked blocks when they rise. Keep climbing the panels until you reach the door..
Urgent Note: Go in immediately! This is because the lava will still keep rising all the way to the ceiling!
Bowser Jr
Now, you must dodge his attack, and throw the shell back. Now jump on him while flipper over to do any damage! Please note, fireballs are a much quicker way of killing him, but they cannot effect him when he's in his shell!
Level 4
Keep going right and jumping from ledge to ledge avoiding the wigglers. Note that you can't kill them unless mega or in a blue shell, so just jump over them. When at some donut platforms, quickly run to the right to reach the mid-way point.
Hit the left block for a vine, and climb up. Keep going to the right until you get to a column of koopas! Keep bouncing on them until the bottom one to get an extra life, and go through the pipe to the right. Now touch the flag pole.
Ghost House
Keep jumping across the platforms to the right while avoiding the boos. Now jump on the red platform and go to the right, and the same for the next one, except avoid the Balloon Boo. Hit the switch and go into the green pipe to go up one floor. Now climb the platforms, hit the red switch and go into the door. Go to the left in this room ad hit the red switch, and enter the pipe to go to the next area. Go to the left again, climb all the platforms and go into the door on the top floor. Now go to the flag to end this level!
Level 5
Go down the pipe, and to the right. Use two bob-ombs to break the blocks, and go to the right some more, jumping across platforms and avoiding spinies, to get to the mid way flag. Cross the see-saw platforms to the right, dodging the enemies as usual until a pipe. Go through, and go to the right to reach the flag.
Level 6
Go to the right to ride Dorrie again. When it reaches a platform, jump over it and do the same for the one with two koopas on top. You will eventually reach a point with three piranha plants in pipes, so go underneath the pipes and wait for the monster to resurface. keep riding right, ducking under the pipes and jumping koopas, then at the end, avoid the koopa and two goombas, entering the pipe. Go right to reach the flag.
Castle
At the start, jump across the swinging platform to the small island. Now ride the next one to a third swinging platform, and run very quickly (dash by holding Y or X) under the Thwomps as they fall down. Wall jump up the shaft at the end, and go right. Run under the big Thwomp, and stomp the two Dry Bones. Keep running right under three more Thwomps, and stomp the Dry Bones in the tunnel. Ride the swinging platforms to the boss door.
Giant Goomba
Here, there are three course of action depending on what power-up you have:
Fire Flower- If you are Fire Mario, stand to the very left of the arena and keep shooting rapidly with fireballs. The boss can't reach you because of the shape of his head, so you are safe here until he dies.
Giant mushroom- Become Mega Mario and jump on the boss once to defeat him.
Anyone else- Hit the switch, ground pound on his head from the newly raised platforms and repeat this twice.
Now, with that done, see part 2 of this guide for help on worlds 5 to 8!
