In other words, would you say some people are more obsessed with how the game looks than the actual gameplay, story of value of such game? Because I would say there has been a rise in the amount of people who think everyone must have super realistic graphics and such, and all I can say is:
'If you want photo realism, watch a movie or go outside'.

I have a PSP and a DS and I don`t say those stuff about the DS. It`s just plain stupid to judge about graphics.

You think its bad over in the UK, come over here.
My friend " The PS3 is the best by far since it costs a lot of money and the graphics are crazy."
It made me mad and now I don't hang out with him because of how much of a retard he is.

Someone thinks a console is good because it costs a lot? That's stupid, but from a business point of view, that would be a company's dream.

Yep I've seen some people obseesed with graphics, so I say '**** off' or just try to pwn them with evidence or I just forget about it.
This is the best one ''PS3 sucks because it's got the same graphics as the PS2''

The worst obsessions when I think about it though are likely cost ones, as saying a console is better/worse because it costs more/less is pretty stupid.

Graphical power? One day the graphics will be so advanced that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between real life and your game, then rather than develping a new slightly better graphics engine, they can spend more time making the gameplay better.

^That's a first. In my opinion though, a true fan does not care if a game's graphics are realistic or not realistic, and does not think one possibility is more important than the other.

Of course! Usually if the game has almost real life graphics the game probably won't be very good, but weird people would like it only because it has great graphics. Take Link to the Past-the graphics are bad but the game is awesome. The game is all that matters.

Definitely, nowadays, it takes REALLY good gameplay and story to make a bad looking game popular and successful.
Personally, I consider graphics a bonus that improves the game if they have it, but not all that the game should be centered around. A game can be very good without graphical power, but graphics is a big asset.
One of my friends IRL is a graphics freak, he believes that all console games should look like they do in their CGs.
cheat-master30

What do you mean by CGs? If you mean cut scenes, then they do... because many games use the same game models and stuff in cut scenes as the actual gameplay. But true about graphics only coming second.

Stop. Now.
aLttP was a SNES game. Its graphics were good. For the time.
And, take any FF game, they have amazing graphics. And, they're on of the best selling series in existence.
Nintendo's two big series, Zelda and Mario are almost always alike.
Yahtzee can come in just about here.....

I quite agree with whats being said here.
I like graphics, I like being able to look and say... 'Stunning...' A lot of the games I play have great gameplay, and, the graphics are good to boot. So, I personally think that, a little extra time, and, a game can fill both categories. I'm patient enough to wait. (SSBB Notwithstanding)

Of course, gameplay can go over board.
Take Shadow of the Colossus. It has an amazing concept of gameplay, but, either to much, or too little effort was put forth, and, the controls were unresponsive at times, and climbing and riding were annoying.

I agree with one_eye. If it has good graphics and good gameplay I can sit there drooling. Or if it has bad graphics but good gameplay, I'll still be happy. Good graphics, bad gameplay and I'll hate it. Bad graphics and bad gameplay, I'll just hurl the game out a window.

Graphics, I think, depend on the game and it's style. From a Mario game, I expect plush, colorful, characters, not an overweight plumber with a 'stache (which, after re-reading this post, I realized that he already is; I mean like the actor in that Mario movie they made some time back...realistic). If I'm playing Call of Duty, I expect good graphics, because that's just how that game franchise is, and seeing realistic environments and characters is a big plus for those games. So, while good graphics are nice, they certainly don't make a game good; they're just icing on the cake.

Yes, but the quality shouldn't hurt its ability to entertain.

What gets me worse than those who play games for graphics are those who bash them for it. They're entiltled to play a game on whatever basis that they prefer. If they find it entertaining to them, what right has anyone to deny them?
I'm not gonna lie, graphics are semi-important to me.
Luis

Graphics, means nothing to me. If a game looks nice, sure I`ll give it credit, but graphics is not what I look for when I play a game that I never played before.

Usually if the graphics in a game are done extremely realistically the game won't be very good because spending lots of time on graphics usually means less time for the actual game.

I think that that's a bit unfair. I've played several games with what I would call realistic graphics, yet still hold onto great, or even awesome, gameplay.
But, I do see what you're saying. If you have a scale, with Graphics on one side and Gameplay on the other, the more "weight" put into Graphics, the "heavier" that side would tend to be, and so the Gamplay side would be "lighter," allowing for less time to be put into Gameplay and, presumably, resulting in less satisfying gameplay.

I was talking about stuff like almost real human type graphics and stuff like that. Yeah, it would be hard to get a good game with so much time and money spend on graphics.

I could care less about how good the game looks, but arent people forgeting about the storyline? i mean, whats a game without a good plot? (some games have exeptions, thought)

Judging about graphics is the same as judging by the way a person looks.

For 2D games, there are a few important (but sadly overlooked) aspects of graphics that actually make the game fun. Smoother animation, cooler explosions, interactivity with the background, double level playfields (aka where there is two levels scrolling passing eachother where you try not to get squashed) helps the gameplay out. For 3D games, graphics are just stupid.
