Well, as in the next major Paper Mario RPG game, as Super Paper Mario was part platformer and part RPG (and one of the games I will get when I get a Wii console)? Because as shown in the screenshot below from Mario Wiki, Poochy was originally going to be in the Nintendo 64 Paper Mario game, but was removed for some reason:

If you did not know what Poochy was exactly, in Yoshi's Island (original), it was a dog that Yoshi could ride across water and lava, and you had to control him across a level called 'Poochy Ain't stupid' in world 1 (extra level). Of course, the semi deplorable controls had many people thinking the exact opposite, as while the dog was lava proof, Yoshi was not.

He also appeared in Tetris Attack as a playable character, and Yoshi's Story, where he finds items.

It sure would be interesting to have a dog as a partner in a Paper Mario game, as either him or a Chain Chomp is something never used before for some reason, and it would be a nice thing for this creature to make it's return.

I have no idea about what it's attacks could be though, but carrying Mario across lava or water, or finding items could be relatively useful in some scenarios.
