Now, the following idea is not something to be actually taken seriously, unless you are one of those die hard fans who try all the ridiculous ideas in the world, and who have a lot of time on your hand (hint, people who make their own metal Master Sword or Wind Waker scroll), and I must admit I semi fall into this category with this site, board games and every project I made having a basis heavily on a gaming series. Never the less, here is why, Paper Mario 2 is not Mario, with how it could, if the references to Mario were largely removed, be turned into a very serious and realistic novel or film.
Now, to get this point, you would have to remove Mario, Peach and Bowser, because in most fact, those are the only real characters (and Bowser's army) that scream Mushroom Kingdom to any normal bystander, andd without them, and a replacement for Peach, it would immediately take a more serious tone. Sadly, because of the pivotal role of Yoshi in this game, we cannot change/remove/alter Yoshi, as otherwise there would be no way to defeat/pass the Iron Harriers in the Glitz Pit, simply because there is no sane, logical way to beat something with infinite defence in logical means. For anyone who actually tried this (and I recommend NOT to), this would be the one thing that would still remind you of it being a Mario game story at the end, because there is nothing else that uses Yoshi like a Nintendo game does (and because very few creatures can eat a solid metal, spiked, infinite defence thing and throw it at a near identical version next to it). You would also have to either change the other characters to somewhat more human or somewhat other non Mario species. Which in 98% of remaining cases, would likely be extremely easy, as very few of them are the typical Mario characters that have been in the platformers.
Storyline wise, this is not much of a typical Mario story in the first place, except in the game with the inclusion of Mario, Peach and Bowser in the story. Seriously, the first real chapter, with the exploration, castle and dragon could go into any medieval related film, as most of the things there could easily be adapted to any scenario. The second one is not really Mario, or anything else, and the army related fighting is certainly not the norm (this reminded me of Pikmin for some reason more than Mario, just fighting large armies of small creatures with more creatures, and larger enemies attacking them). Chapter 3 could easily be in a more realisticly based film or novel, because it is partly based on arena fighting, and largely a mystery story, neither of which are usual Mario concepts. Someone could easily adapt this to just about any setting from Medieval to futuristic whatsoever. Hell, you could have a medieval film or Mario game here, or a modern Mario game or film, or even a many thousands of years in front film or Mario game here, as the characters act in a very non typical way. Chapter 4 is also not really a very typical Mario chapter, as the idea of pigs and shape shifters could easily be adapted for any kind of horror film or such, and even without any changes, the typical human characters, and Doopliss to an extent, and the bats and such could easily fit in a totally different, non Mario series related film, novel or game. Chapter 5 is cool, but while this is a little more Mario related, you could easily adapt it as an almost Indiana Jones style pirate adventure film or novel extremely easily, as the caves and exploration do seem to have a more gritty and semi realistic tone that past such levels set on islands and in caves.
